Caso a simulation to reality!

Posted by Jackie at 9:35 AM
Building a case can be quite challenging. I have been trying to do so for the past couple of weeks. And something curious has happened along the way. I have come down to thinking how true is it that our XXI century teens will lead successfful lives in there adulthood? When academically students are being taught contents that are irrelevant for the future. Basically, students should be taught to listen and speak fluently in at least 2 language, use technology as tools to become knowledgeable about reality, and develop cultural awareness to negotiate globally and locally.

Getting ready!

Posted by Jackie at 9:01 AM Labels: caso

I just connected the dots! I guess I got carried away in developing these activities for Casos I Semester. I really wasn't thinking about my students being in their first year. Now that I have stopped and thought about it, the activities are to complex for Caso 1. Each activity represents 3 casos.
Considering what I have read about Backwards Design, plus revising the Casos 1 from 2006, 2007 and 2008, I can say that these activites are too broad. I have started to read "Learning with cases". Cases are not the same as a subject. So, up to this point I have read and outlined Caso 1 Needs Analysis Report. I can say that I have a grip on the whole concept on how to build a case. I have a better vision now of what needs to be accomplished.
I would like to say that all this has given me a totally new perspective on teaching considering the fact that there are parallel activities for the learner as well as for the educator. Right now, I am learning how to build a case out of scratch. It's my creation but in order for it to be created I need to learn about it first. Which means that what I am learning is just for me, the goals, assessments, and activities need to be created in order for my students to crack the Caso. WOW!!!

Multiple Perspectives

Posted by Jackie at 12:21 PM

Nowadays pedegogy needs to focus on real world problems to set in a basis of understanding so learners can engage and react to what is happening around them. Learners want relevant and applicable knowledge. This means that as educators we need to extend beyond our areas of expertise, collaborating with our peers in other subjects to link and bind the learning in one area to the other.

Projects should be encompassing, bringing together and reinforcing the learning in the disciplines. The sum of their learning will be greater than the individual aspects taught in isolation. This is a holistic overview of the education process, building and valuing each and every aspect of the XXI Century learners education.

Networking and Quality Education?

Posted by Jackie at 12:10 PM Labels: networking XXI quality education
I find that education today is a new frontier. Educators must consider using as many options as possible to understand the digital natives. Networking is one common feature among teenagers. Take for example Facebook and Blackberry Messneger. You create a digital community. Information and data at the tips of your fingers. You create a network of people who have one or several devices to be in contact, connected or in touch, why not say updated.
I have discovered that learners value educators who use these devices because we can understand what they go through, the addiction of being "connected" "engaged" to people who share, tasks, activities, or work in common.
Once learners sense your true interest in being part of a network for real, that what they produce is being read, graded and valued by others they tend to become fond of learning. You are no longer a guide nor a coach but a motivator for activating the urge for knowledge.

What is blogging to me?

Posted by Jackie at 6:35 AM Labels: digital

Blogging is an innovative way to carry your personal journal or learning/reflection log. It will allow me to keep my thoughts and doubts in an organized way.

I think I will be able to put my career into perspective and organize my writings and readings in one single spot.

I recently read a comment on a blog about how students have no social skills what-so-ever beingraised in a computer generated world. I find this a bit disturbing, because social skills include being able to communicate with others f2f and why not digitally. I find that the focus is more on the form and not the depth. Spelling and computer skills have nothing to do with social skills. A student of mine recently posted an article "Are computers female or male". She received so much reaction. One "female" closed her reaction with "indignated woman". The 'Indiganted woman" had so many mistakes yet she was able to understand and react to a post. Isn't that socializing?

Meet Me

My photo
Jackie
Guayaquil, Guayas, Ecuador
For over 25 years I have been involved in education. I have always loved to teach and learn at the same time. I find that you can never stop. It's an addiction, that can be healthy for acedemic purposes but unhealthy for your family. I find that life is about learning and teaching, that learner and educator roles shift and overlap in life settings as well as in the classroom.
